For the last 100 years trench coats and macs have been synonymous with London. From Portobello to Spitalfields you can find all sorts of different raglan sleeved coats and Macs with an A-line silhouette. Over the years we have collected so many, fallen in and out of love with them. But one just stuck, it has been on the hook in our hallway for over a decade and is still being used to walk the dog, go shopping or for any random outing. It is raglan perfection, stretched out by Simon’s shoulder and Sono’s overloaded shopping bags. We started with this as a base shape and evolved and improved the pattern (with the secret help of our Japanese super pattern cutter who helps us just because he likes us and loves our clothes). And so the CARL Coat was born: an oversized silhouette with rounded shoulders, and balance shifted to the front to give attitude.

The lining is hanging – for the reason that it creates less tensile stress and can be worn for many years. This is a lot harder to construct and more time insensitive, but important to us. We have two types of lining: a lightweight lining developed in organic Gots Cotton, and a heavier lining developed with our weaver in Veneto, also 100% organic Gots Cotton. Our weaver think we are insane to use it for pocket bags and lining, because it is their beautiful shirting twill, of which they are very proud of. 

On the CARL Coat we use the durable twill on the sleeve and top half of the body (where there is the most amount of wear) and lighter lining on the bottom half to reduce weight and pull and give the garment more drape. This is all the same as our 90-year-old favourite make that has lasted so long and still works and looks elegant. We hope the CARL Coat can last this long too.
